CUBE-S

Learning points

I learned a lot during this individual project. Going through a design project independently, and what comes with it, was new for me. Making considered decisions myself and being the only one responsible for the project's progress brought me independence and made me accurate and strict with myself.
I experienced that the threshold of doing research before starting a design process was way lower, and even more enjoyable when doing research within a field of interest. It felt like connecting all the pieces together and gave me more confidence in the design phase.
Crafting the prototype remembered me why I like doing it so much; giving life to my own ideas and with that, solving problems.
Regarding my vision and identity, I really enjoyed the impact a design could have on a real-life situation. Although certain steps need to be taken before the concept can be implemented into the context of Ketelhuisplein, I am certain that my drive for success together with my developed professional attitude will get this working.

For my Final Bachelor Project, I dove into the social context of Eindhoven’s neighborhood Strijp-S. Based on my own research (desk and in-field) and interviews with the Strijp-S working and living experts, three focus areas were selected. These areas then were analyzed according to the PACT framework. I continued my project with one of these focus areas wherein I saw the most potential (Ketelhuisplein). From a Placemaking perspective, this location was evaluated. The most important insight was that the area lacked in terms of sociability. This meant that most of the square was hardly used outside the programming and therefore lacked in commotion. This was mainly due to the fact that, unlike the smaller adjacent field, it missed means to facilitate social interaction.
Now the research gave shape to the design requirements and boundaries, concept ideations were done. These eventually led to the CUBE-S. A modular, user-friendly, seating facility that is easily movable to offer space for the events due to the right choice of materials. Contrasting the concrete surface, its industrial, colorful aesthetic is based on the look and feel of its context, making it inviting to interact.
