Press2Play

Learning points

As my first big design project, this project has brought me much. It has allowed me to gain experience in (project) planning ahead, working in a structured manner, and collaborating effectively within a team for a significant period where clear communication is needed. I have had the opportunity to go through a comprehensive human- and user-centered design process.

Nowadays, children grow up with more and more screen time instead of playing outside. Parents are afraid they will get dirty, fall or hurt themselves and use media as a babysitter. Children must be active at least one hour a day and this is getting harder and harder for them. Also, playing stimulates their creative brain, social and motor capabilities, and concentration.
Press2Play is a dynamic system, that connects children to each other and lets them stimulate each other to make playing outside fun again, rather than punishing them for playing indoors. When children come home from school and decide to start playing on their phone or tablet, their parents can start the screen timer in the app. The tangible button of the children will then glow red if the time has been exceeded, warning them for squared eyes. The button will then tell them they can play outside and notify their friends by pressing the button. To make friends, the children can hold their buttons against each other to connect them, after which a notification will be sent to the connected buttons. Via the connected app, parents can manage the account of their child.
